There are many harmful contaminants present in tap water. My family is passionate about our whole home water filtration system. Kids will be kids, and trying to keep the bath water out of their mouths can seem like a tedious chore. Needless to say, the skin is the largest organ and absorbs all the nasties.
Let's talk about some of the nasty things in tap water and how they are affecting your health.
Chlorine
Chlorine is added to municipal water to kill harmful disease-causing bacteria and viruses, like typhoid fever, hepatitis, and cholera. While chlorine is effective at reducing the spread of infectious waterborne diseases, it reacts with naturally occurring materials in water to form dangerous chemical byproducts, trihalomethanes (THM), that threaten your health. Two of these THM compounds, bromodichloromethane, and chloroform, are classified by the World Health Organization as possible carcinogens.
Moreover, chlorine strips your hair and skin of the natural oils in charge of keeping damage out and moisture in, leaving your skin dry, itchy, flaky, and sensitive.
PFAS
PFAS (perfluorinated chemicals or PFCs) are used in hundreds of consumer products because of their non-stick properties. These include Teflon, food packaging, clothing, carpet, furniture fabric, and firefighting foam. 97% of Americans have PFAS present in their blood. PFAS in tap water is harmful because eventually at extremely low levels, some of these chemicals may result in serious health problems, including cancer, developmental effects to fetuses during pregnancy or to breastfed infants, damage to liver tissue, and effects on the immune system and thyroid.
Lead
Many people may unknowingly drink water contaminated with lead, either because of old lead pipes, faucets, or other plumbing fixtures with high lead levels. Lead is harmful to human health even at low levels. Lead is also tricky because it accumulates in the body over time. Children are particularly vulnerable during the first 6 years of life because their brains are in critical stages of development and side effects can be present at a much lower level of exposure than in adults.
Fluoride
Long-term exposure to drinking water that contains more than 1.5 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride can lead to health problems, which is like 1 drop of the toxin in only 40 liters of water.
Today fluoride is present in all water sources at concentrations ranging from minimally detectible to greater than 10 ppm.
Fluoride is not an essential nutrient. It is not necessary for tooth development. What is necessary for tooth development? Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and potassium.
Arsenic
Arsenic is one of the most prevalent toxic organic compounds found in water. It is a confirmed carcinogen that has both acute and long-term health effects. Arsenic is naturally found in the Earth's crust in soil, rocks, and minerals. The health effects associated with arsenic exposure include bladder, lung, skin, kidney, liver, and prostate cancers; skin damage, organ damage, and problems with the circulatory system.
I think you get it. The list of contaminants found in tap water could go on, and on. However, there is no need to worry when you have a whole home system from Acuario. Our systems filter all the contaminants, including heavy metals and fluoride (and all the above-mentioned). Your body will be thanking you!
